2022 GMC Sierra 3500
The Sierra 3500 HD pickup is the truck you need when you have to haul massive loads and want to do it in style. It received a significant refresh for the 2021 model year, so it carries over to 2022 without any notable changes, still providing drivers with all the features and equipment they love. GMC offers the Sierra with a choice of engines, and it has some towing tech to make hauling safer and easier.
Trim Levels (Exterior)
The entry-level Sierra 3500 has 18-inch steel wheels, LED headlights, LED taillights, and manually adjustable tow mirrors. Step up to the SLE for 18-inch alloy wheels, power-adjustable trailering mirrors, the MultiPro tailgate, and upgraded trim elements. Bump up again to the SLT for lighting in the cargo bed and power-extending trailering mirrors or to the AT4 for an off-road suspension, skid plates, a spray-in bed liner, and body-colored bumpers. The top-level Denali comes with 20-inch wheels, chrome exterior trim, and sidesteps.
Engine (Power)
The base powertrain for the Sierra 3500 is a 6.6-liter gas V-8. It delivers 401 horsepower and puts out 464 pound-feet of torque. Upgrade to the 6.6-liter turbodiesel engine, and you'll get 445 horsepower and an impressive 910 pound-feet of torque. The Sierra's base engine uses a six-speed automatic transmission, while the diesel uses a 10-speed.
Performance
This large truck is all about towing power. When equipped with dual rear wheels and the diesel engine, the 3500 can tow up to 36,000 pounds. The regular cab can handle up to 17,200 pounds, and if you have the gas engine, it maxes out at 20,000 pounds.
Interior
There's room for up to six in the Sierra, depending on the cab. The entry-level model comes equipped with vinyl on the seats and a roomy front bench seat with a 40/20/40 split. The SLE upgrades to cloth upholstery, adds under-seat storage, and comes with power door locks. Leather upholstery comes in the SLT and above, and these trims also have heated front seats, a power-adjustable driver's seat, and a heated steering wheel. Choosing the AT4 gets you ventilated front seats and heated seats in the back. The upscale Denali upgrades to premium leather and adds a power-sliding rear window.
The technology in the Sierra 3500 includes Apple CarPlay and Android integration, and the base model has a 7-inch touch screen. You'll get satellite radio, a Wi-Fi hot spot, and a 4.2-inch color driver information display in the SLE, and the SLT adds a 120-volt power outlet in the bed and upgrades to an 8-inch touch screen. Choose the high-end Denali for wireless charging, navigation, and a Bose stereo system.
Safety Features
All the Sierra 3500 models have a rearview camera, a full suite of air bags, and traction and stability control. The Denali comes standard with advanced driver aids such as forward collision warning, lane-departure warning, a blind-spot monitor, rear cross-traffic alert, and front and rear parking sensors. A surround-view camera system with a 360-degree view around the truck is also standard on the Denali. These safety systems are available as options for all Sierra trims except the base.
